Don't Chase

It took me a long time to learn the lesson of not chasing people about a business opportunity. Early in my networking career, I made all the freshman mistakes that nearly everyone makes. Of course, it didn't help matters that I was in a business that was surrounded by a questionable reputation in the marketplace.

In those days, if I found anyone willing to hear my pitch, I was like a rabid dog. I would overwhelm them with all the relevant details as I understood them. Want to talk about telling and selling? Enough minutiae to choke a horse!

Then, if the poor fool would supply a phone number or email address, my follow-up would back them into a corner. There would be the occasional person that would sign up into my business but would vanish from the face of the earth within a matter of weeks or even days. This is why the witness protection program was created.

Have I described your role in your business yet? Anyone else made this type of mistake?

I later learned why having the proper posture in your business was so vitally important.

How effective will your partnerships be if you are having to drag them, kicking and screaming, in the business arena? How will you be able to help them get their business started? How receptive will they be to the training you are attempting to supply? Think about it. You merely wore them down, broke their resistance, made them afraid to answer the phone.

Today, I refuse to talk anyone into business with me and I do not accept just anyone as my business partner. I work with leads quite a bit these days and I make certain that they qualify to join my business. More importantly, I make certain that they are qualified to receive my most precious gift - my time.

If I find someone who will carry their 50 bricks, I commit to them that I will also carry 50 bricks to help them. I will not build their business for them and I will not chase them in order to convince them that the opportunity I am offering could be life-changing for them. I will do my best to educate them about the business but I cannot teach them how to recognize opportunity.
